The historic and medieval one Ghent

It qualified as one of the European cities that better they conserve its medieval past, the city of Ghent in Belgium -known also as Flanders Oriental- is a great place to visit and to do historic tourism.



This beautiful city, that in the local language -Dutch- him is known like Gent, and in French as Gand, was the largest medieval city Europe during the century XVI, so alone surpassed by Paris. Going back still more in the time, this region was inhabited by the Celts, of the one that originates its name, since Ghent comes from the Celtic “one Ganda” that gives to understand a relation of convergence. In the case of Ghent by the convergence of the rivers Lys and Escalation, where the city is found. There are many things by doing in the city, but without place to doubts the greater attraction instigates it the historic monuments, being Ghent the city with the greatest number of monuments in every Belgium. Through the Bridge San Miguel -that crosses the River Lys- three can be appreciated marvelous medieval bell towers in whose interior rest magnificent flamenco altarpieces.



Continuing the route by the historic helmet of Ghent we find us with the Spring of Graslei where elegant palaces rest, and also bars and restaurants.

Besides showing off the title of the Belgian city with the greatest number of historic monuments, has also the title of being the city with greater quantity of breweries. Many of these traditional breweries are found very near the Castle of the Counts of Flanders. To give an idea that the number of breweries that existed before, they are told that in the last 50 years they have been reduced in great number, remaining so alone 300 in the center of the city.


Besides breweries and palaces, the city brims of energy and enjoys an intense cultural life, where the majority of their inhabitants are polyglots and they speak flow the English, the French and the German. A good way to know the city is through the river in a boat trip, or can also do it in bicycle. Another option is to do it on foot, since the city is not very large and will always have somewhat interesting that to see the return of the corner.
