Castle of Threave, a construction on the River Dee

The Castle of Threave is an old construction, located in an island of the River Dee, very near the Castle Douglas of Dumfries in Scottish lands (to see hotels in Scotland).

The castle has a rectangular form and is comprised of five plants. To arrive at the first plant, the only form to agree is through a bridge that conducts directly to the entrance of the construction. The first silver has a vaulted form, and originally, there was located the kitchen. Immediately next to the first plant extends a deep basement, that was the jail, next to its respective well. Originally, in the kitchen there was a great stair in spiral that conducted to the large parlors of the second plants. In those large rooms extended a second bridge, that conducted to an upper level. And over these flats, were the two last with several cameras of different uses. All the construction was surrounded by a great wall, besides three towers, located strategically in the corners.

Currently, alone five meters of the wall they stay standing and an alone one of the towers, besides the trench that surrounded the wall traditionally. If the castle wants to be visited nowadays, this can be done in small embarkations that offer the tourist service.

The walk to the Castle Threave is interesting therefore conserves memories of the Scottish history of the Middle Ages. The castle was built around the year 1370, by the third count Douglas, Archibald the Somber one. The castle was inhabited by the count, its wife and its children. The possession of the castle in the hands of the Douglas was to the year 1455, when this was captured by the king James II. The castle passed by hand of the Crown, remaining as its official guardians, the Maxwell.

Then, during to the war from 1638 to 1640, the castle was captured by the religious group of the Covenanters. In the hands of these, several of the buildings of the castle, partly they were destroyed, leaving alone part of the standing construction. Further on, during the Napoleonic war, the remainders of the castle that still stayed standing, they were utilized as jail to imprison the French prisoners. Recently in 1913, the castle passed to the guardianship of the State, and now is conserved like a historic monument of the old one Scotland.
